Founded in 1976, Dalkey Players is one of Ireland’s best known amateur drama groups. The group is based in the historic town of Dalkey in south County Dublin. They rehearse every Tuesday and Thursday, September to May, and perform regularly in Dalkey Town Hall and other local venues. In recent years, the group has introduced an innovative studio theatre programme in The Vico Rooms, also in Dalkey. Dalkey Players has built up a loyal following, not just from the locality, but from the greater Dublin area as well. We currently rehearse in Harold Boys School, Patrick St, Dalkey.
Productions have been extremely diverse and have included works by the Ephron sisters, Friel, Wilde, Miller, Shakespeare, Chekov, Leonard, Simon, Carr, Behan and Churchill.
The group has extensive experience of the Drama Festival Circuit, both One Act and Full Length, and has won numerous awards over the years in all competition categories – acting, direction, set design, lighting and stage management.
Alongside regular productions and participation in Drama Festivals, the group engages in a number of other activities. These include:
The group runs regular workshops on acting, directing, movement and voice for its members. Previous workshop facilitators have included Pat Kinevane, Ena May, Scott Marshall , Chrissie Poulter, Jim Culleton, Denis Taylor and Conall Morrison
Every year, members attend the long established Stageworks summer school in Gormanston College, and/or the DLI summer school held in Limerick University.
The group organises “Directors’ Options”, an end-of season in-house production of short excerpts, sketches etc for members only, where new talent gets an opportunity to act, direct or stage manage in front of a supportive audience of fellow group members. In recent years this has taken place in the Vico and Carry Hall
